Welcome to Take time, Take care: Support and resource site for parents and caretakers of children with special health care needs.
Never in a million years did I think this could happen to me. My family has no health issues, my sister has two healthy little boys and our 3 old daughter rarely is sick. I had a picture perfect pregnancy and labor with my first, so this couldn’t happen to me. I have healthy children. I took my vitamins and ate the right foods. This happens to other people, and I feel sorry for them and thank God that it hasn’t happen to us… But it did. And the unexpectedness of it all hit us like a ton of bricks. You may ask yourself what went wrong? Was it something I did when I was pregnant? If you have a child that was born with a certain condition or medical need, you may rack your brain for an answer. A reason. There’s always a reason, right? Was it that weekend I went away and didn’t remember to take my vitamins? Was it that cup of coffee I had on occasion? Something I ate, or didn’t eat? Eventually you have to abandon the guilt and realize things just happen, and it was completely out of your control.
I’ve created this website to provide a few simple tips of things I’ve learned along the way in the hopes that it makes your time in the hospital and the days after, just a touch easier. I never want anyone to feel alone going through this, because you’re not.
There is so much information out there, it is completely overwhelming. Consider this a type of “Cliff’s Notes” version. Click on “What to Expect” “Resources” “Helpful Websites” and “Terms” for a few pointers and definitions that you may find helpful.
